How To Make Adjustable Sliding Knots With Leather (& Our 1st Blog Post!)

WELCOME! We’re so glad you’re here! It’s hard to believe that we’ve been around for 14.5 years and this is our first blog post… but so it goes. We offer so much help every day to our beloved customers in the store that it only makes sense to document the most commonly asked questions to serve as a resource for all jewelry makers! So with that in mind, our blog will teach you basic jewelry techniques, jewelry trends, unveil our new products, discuss local Grand Haven area happenings, and undoubtedly much more!

Summer is definitely here in our little beach town and one of the most popular jewelry materials is leather! And there’s no wonder leather is here to stay – it’s versatile, durable, comes in tons of different thicknesses, colors, and finishes so it goes with just about anything.

See what we mean?

It can be feminine or masculine – perfect for last minute father’s day gifts!

Not to mention that it’s simple, natural, and it can create the easiest adjustable necklace or bracelet, without a clasp!

This particular technique is often called a sliding knot or a slipknot. Knowing how to tie a sliding knot is a tremendous tool that will come in handy more often than you think. We tie them all the time! They’re great for kids who can’t or don’t want to use clasps and who grow an inch a day, for gifts when you don’t know the recipient’s preferred necklace length or wrist size, and for those times you just want something simple and easy to showcase a pendant or a few knotted beads on.

This is the classic sliding knot we’re talking about:

You’ll notice we have two leather strands on the far sides of the knots and three strands in the middle. This is because this particular design is using one looped piece of leather to connect to two different ends of the centerpiece. But don’t let this confuse you, the technique is the same!

First, you’ll want to take your desired bracelet or necklace size and double it to get the proper length for your adjustable leather piece. When everything is assembled, it’s time to tie your knots.

  1. Cross your ends, one over the other, leaving about 4 inches on each end.
  2. Choose your working cord (left or right) and double it back halfway through its tail; hold this fold with your thumb and pointer finger.
  3. Take the end of the doubled back working cord and wrap it around all of the cords twice.

4. Now slide the working cord’s end back through the wrapping loops, exiting through the initial fold.

5. Pull the ends to tighten the knot.

6. Repeat these steps on the other side.

7. Glue each knot, making sure not to glue the knots to the cords that it needs to slide over, and trim the tails.

And, VOILA! That’s how to make a sliding knot!

By the way, we have tons of great pendants, wide-holed glass, clay, wood, and even pearl beads for you to design your perfect summer jewelry pieces!

So come on down to lovely Grand Haven and say hello! We’ll be here all week 😉
